2003 Pricing Change
After six years of maintaining the same annual $59.95 rate and swallowing our own increased costs, and with feedback from the poll, MagWeb.com is raising its rates starting Jan. 1, 2003. The new rates are:
1 week Quickee Peek: $10 (for that in-and-out special project)
1 month Take a Look: $20 ($20 per month)
3 months Trial Period: $40 ($13.33 per month)
6 months Attack Run: $60 ($10 per month)
12 months Super Value: $75 ($6.25 per month)
You'll notice that the 1 week and 1 month rate remain basically unchanged (OK, we raised them a nickel), but that the 3 and 6 months rates were raised $5 and $10. With close to 40,000 articles from 105 magazines in the archive and posting 24-25 issues per month plus bonus items, we believe MagWeb.com offers incredible value, but we've said that all along.
Discount for Renewals
For our Charter Members, your rate remains the same. When you signed up in 1996, we made a promise that no matter what our rates did, you'd keep the same low 1996 "charter" rate as long as you continued your membership. We keep our promises at MagWeb.com.
For everyone else, when you renew your membership, you get a 10% discount off the new rates. So, if your annual membership expires in 2003, you'll pay $75 - 10% (that's $7.50) = $67.50 for the year. And if you're one of those folks who takes out shorter memberships (we have a few even though we point out the savings for buying a 1-year membership), we'll give you a 10% discount for renewing, too.
You have to renew before your membership expires to get the discount, although we will make an exception if you are active military sent to a warzone like Afghanistan or Iraq (it's happened before). It's an incentive for you to keep renewing. New members pay the full price (hint...join MagWeb.com before Dec 31, 2002 for the current $59.95 per year rate, because our computer programming clicks over the new pricing at midnight).
The discount is our way of keeping one eye on our bottom line so we can keep operating while keeping the other eye on our loyal members who deserve our thanks for their support.

MagWeb.com Catches a Break?
Russ Lockwood caught a break last week, a finger bone break that is, and got to sample the wonderful world of medical paperwork. While playing basketball, the little pinky got caught in a crush. It was less a snap than a subdued pop, some pain, and that pit of the stomach realization that this was no ordinary jammed finger. The lucky part was that it was a clean break, so no surgery was needed. The sad part is that for the next three weeks, the hand's in a half cast with time off for good behaviour when showering. Then, another X-ray and we go from there. For the fashion conscious among you, this season's colors are black, blue, and a deep purple with yellow tinting.

Xtra craP: Back to Normal
MagWeb.com , which suffered a hard drive crash on the production PC, is now back to "normal" operation with a new PC system and upgraded software. The move to Windows XP ("Xtra craP") is done, albeit Xtremely Painful. Microsoft should prohibited, by law and various agents drawn from third-world dictatorships, from releasing any more Windows versions, with any more "features" or interface changes, until every piece of software from every company is completely bug-free. I already have Word bugs upon power-up and several "seen once but who knows what happened" system conflicts.
And it has taken days to track down check boxes and other toggles to turn off screen flotsam and jetsam. If Gates ever had to use his own software to do anything else other than turn out more Xtra craPpy software, he'd have fired his entire programming team and replaced them with the proverbial 1,000 chimpanzees banging away on typewriters.
And to spread some additional fertilizer words, the Caere programmers owe me 1/2 a day. I just upgraded to Caere OmniPage 12 to painfully discover that the third-rate programming morons change the "Save As" function on the fly from "save all pages" of a scanned issue to "save current page." You guessed it. I lost an entire issue except for the last page. Not only did it take time to re-scan, but also to figure out why/how. I've been able to duplicate the situation, and so avoid a repeat. I also heap scorn, abuse, and a multitude of curse words upon the stupid bastard(s) who implemented this "feature."
The original production PC has been retrofitted with a new hard drive and will serve in a back-up capacity. The back-up production PC, still running under Windows 95 by the way, continues to run.

MagWeb.com Monthly and Yearly Recap
MagWeb.com ends the month of September with 20 issues or equivalents and 13 book reviews. Plus, we co-sponsored the Borodino 2002 Napoleonic Conference, did a few local interviews about the show, and attended the Napoleonic Society of America's Annual Conference as a dealer. On a sad note, we suffered a hard drive meltdown (since fixed) on our main production machine. On a happier note, we took an extended business trip to many historical sites in Virginia. Stay tuned for additions to our travel section.
Year to Date 2002 total: 222 issues, 67 news items, 50 book reviews, 20 parts of WWII Operation Cartwheel, a downloadable MP3 file, 1 WWII Memoir, 2 One-Drous book chapters, and 76 other articles.
