Search Engine Back On-Line

MagWeb.com just brought its new search engine (Perlfect Search 3.2) on-line. It may require some adjustments as we get to know this engine a little better, but so far, it's gone through its testing A-OK. I hope to make this my last apology for search engine inconveniences, but what can we say about the technological challenges of running MagWeb.com other that we respond as best we can. The hi-tech superhighway still has a number of potholes. The last one gave us a couple of flat tires that needed changing. Now, if we can tighten up all the lug nuts...

Server Wrestling

MagWeb.com suffered more growing pains as the Sun Enterprise 250 Server was finally placed on-line, and sure enough, functions started to evaporate: e-mail, sign-in, secure server, search engine, etc. We're still not all the way there in the switch from a Pentium to a Sun box, and from BSDI to Solaris, but we're at least making progress. Members can enter MagWeb.com, new folks can sign up, the new digital certificate for a secure server has been installed, e-mail works, and various crucial background processes are up to speed.

I am amazed how much can go wrong with a "simple" server swap. It's been frustrating for us, none too pleasant for the techies, and inconvenient for our members. I apologize and expect the worst of it is behind us. I knew the Pentium server would serve for 4-5 years (MagWeb.com completes 5 years in operation on June 30!), and expect the new Sun box to last as long as we continue to grow, spin off features, and do more.

A word of thanks to all those members who took the time to e-mail and phone about various gremlins. We feed that info back to the techie folks. Thank you for supporting us!
