MagWeb.com Selected Price Rise: Jan 1, 2000
We're holding the one-year membership price the same: $59.95 (still under $5 per month!). However, we're raising the 1-, 3-, and 6-month memberships by $5. So, on Jan 1, 2000: 1 month of MagWeb.com will be $19.95, 3 months will be $34.95, and 6 months will be $49.95. The 12-month will remain $59.95. As promised back in 1996, Charter Members will retain their lower charter rate.
We charge because magazine royalty payments, telecommunications costs, advertising/marketing, taxes, and other business costs need to be paid. With close to 15,000 articles from almost 75 magazines, MagWeb.com is the world's largest military history and product archive and equal to a Fortune 500 company's site. I'm proud of what we've accomplished, and spend 10-12-14 hours per day, usually six days a week, scanning, coding, marketing, and doing other efforts to bring military history and related products to the Web. It's not easy. It's not cheap. But we've been pioneering the concept of multiple publications from multiple publishers on one web site for one low cost and will continue to do so with your continued support.
If you run a business, you know what it takes to keep it going and growing. If you run a web site, doubly so. I remain committed to keeping MagWeb.com rates incredibly low (under $5 per month) as long as possible while keeping Coalition Web, Inc. financially sound. I remain committed to expanding the number of magazines and issues available. I remain committed to funding the new features and projects coming out next year. And I remain committed to providing excellent, personalized customer support. It may be a long-term strategy in a short-term minded world, but it's the one MagWeb.com continues to pursue. Thank you.

Search Engine Update: Oct 21-26
"Good News, Bad News"
Whenever I hear that from techy Tibor, I cringe a bit. He has a stopgap version running in test mode. It's ugly, but it works to an extent for a half-dozen magazines, then crashes...but not always. The bad news is that after TWO major hardware and software upgrades, a number of minor tweaks, and literally babysitting the search engine to watch the processes, we have hit some sort of internal parameter in the UNIX system. The good news is that Tibor and our hired gun Kirk will perform a *third* upgrade (to UNIX this time). Nuthin' like a frustrating and expensive upgrade problem to ruin our month...and force us to apologize again...and again.

Continued Apologies for our Search Engine
We tried one thing, then another. We even tried reloading, and then loading an updated version. Then we called in a hired gun, er, a specialist, and he tried yet another techie technique. No go. He believes we've outgrown the original engine settings relating to the innate architecture and set up that we use. Then he suggested two options: one that "probably wouldn't work, but might be worth a try," and the other which he described as "a scary operation" which "will probably work."
Folks, before I authorize anything scary, and suffer a potential crash of the rest of MagWeb, I want more research. So, I apologize profusely for this software snafu. We're going to be doing a little more research...not to mention looking for an entirely new search engine.
On a more positive technical note, we've renewed our digital certificate for the secure credit card for another year.

Search Engine Wrestling
We've been wrestling with a search engine problem of late. You may get errors when using it. One theory is that we have reached some sort of concept limit. Try using "keyword" option instead--doesn't always work, but we're trying to figure out why it's acting up. Another is that the rather rude shut-down from Hurricane Floyd corrupted some parameter. Another theory is that our move that placed the server on a faster telecom line (I hope you've noticed the speed increase of late) is causing some sort of conflict with the LAN connection. We apologize for any inconvenience.
