Reims, France
by William Peterson
A World War II enthusiast travelling in the eastern Netherlands, after making the obligatory pilgrimage to the "Bridge Too Far" in Arnhem and the Airborne Museum Hartenstein in neighboring Oosterbeek, can round out the day nicely by travelling south on "Hell's Highway" through Nijmegen and then continuing another 35 km to the National Museum of the War and Occupation in Overloon. This is not a museum to be reserved for a rainy day: The best exhibits are outdoors along a trail winding through the extensive wooded grounds. This unusual arrangement makes for a delightful voyage of discovery as each bend reveals an unexpected treasure. Among the more memorable pieces are a British Valentine bridge-laying tank, a beautifully preserved B-25 in Free Dutch colors, and a Landing Craft-Infantry. Rating: 7 out of 10 Location: Overloon is about 2 km west of highway A-73, south of Boxmeer and north of Venray, in Limburg Province. Telephone 04788-1820.
