Reims, France
by William Peterson
Located on the eastern outskirts of Reims, France, this fort was in the front lines from 1914 to 1918. The outside earthworks, formed from the chalky white soil of Champagne, look like something from Tatooine. The compound includes a curious collection of heavy artillery pieces. The real riches are inside: This is one of the finest collections of WWI weapons, uniforms, and equipment anywhere. Their special pride is the display of 560 Imperial German helmets, blazing with brass and enamel and ready for inspection by the Kaiser! Access by RN44, leave Reims in the direction of Chalons-sur-Marne. Admission 20 F. Closed Tuesdays and 24 Dec-6 Jan.
