MagWeb.com Analysis

In looking at both favorite and second favorite side by side, Napoleon certainly seems alive and well among the MagWeb.com membership, with WWII and the Horse and Musket period in general right behind. These are sort of the "A" list periods.

Victorian Colonial and American Civil War are somewhat close, but with enough of a separation to form a solid "B" list.

After that, it gets a little murky, but Classical Ancients, Pre-500BC Ancients, Modern, Medieval, and Renaissance rise a little above the others. Call them the "C" group.

The rest seem to be jockeying for attention, so we'll call them the "D" group.

And bringing up the rear, even behind "no answer" is Early 19th Century, whose wars are not as well known or not well studied, or just unappealing. Hence, we'll call that that the "E" period.

Don't Get Nervous

MagWeb.com will continue to post articles from magazines covering all topics, but these results help us figure out how to keep the majority of you happy.

We did a further breakdown of the top two, seeing how they interact. In other words, did the people who voted for the Napoleonic period automatically vote for Horse and Musket, or did they pick another period?

Thus, for all those Napoleonic fans, it wasn't an automatic horse and musket vote. WWII topped the list, followed by H&M, and understandably, ACW in third.

Likewise, we looked at WWII to see what their second favorite period was. Lo and behold! It's the Napoleonic era. World War I makes an appearance, which is understandable, tied with ACW. The surprise, at least to me, is two-fold. Between the world wars rated low among WWII buffs--guess the Spanish Civil War, Japanese invasion of China, or Italian adventures in Ethiopia garner little attention. Medieval rated relatively high. Chivalry, I suppose, is "in."

I did take a look at Early 19th Century (1816-1861 AD) to what those folks picked: split mostly between ACW and Dark Ages.

However, it does point up the relationship between the Napoleonic and WWII periods, and the interest in things Marlburian, 7 Years War/French and Indian War, and American Revolution. I know it's not perfect, the Napoleonic era extends to pre-1800 and so on, but for a general picture, this will do. You can slice and dice data in a multitude of ways--so called data mining--but this is enough for a first pass.
