MagWeb.com Poll 2002

How Do You View the World?

Question 17: How Do You View the World?

This series of questions lets you air your views on other governments and organizations around the world, and whether you think they help or hinder the US.

We took some heat in the answers from non-US members (about a third of the MagWeb.com membership is non-US) who found this too much of a US-centric question. In retrospect, there was probably a better way to ask the question. The intent was to gauge a feeling of President Bush's "you're either with us or against us" attitude laid down about the time the poll was being created, then see if there was a correlation with these feelings and the next "Hot Spots of the World" question. My thanks to those who pointed out such syntax flaws.

Still, with the intent as noted above, here are the results. Some surprises...

MagWeb.com Analysis

Although generally what you'd expect, there's a couple of surprises buried within the numbers -- no doubt helped by our more knowledgeable membership than the run-of-the-mill newspaper/TV survey.

Nobody viewed Syria as a friend, even though a small percentage thought of Iraq as one. Kuwait still gets relatively positive ratings, although Saudi Arabia's reputation has taken a beating in the past decade. I suspect it's increasingly being seen as a breeding ground of militants, not to mention a fund raising capital for some violent Palestinian organizations. The PLO has taken a nosedive in popularity here--suicide bombers will do that. I bet the collective "we" had a better feeling about it prior to this latest uprising. Israel continues to garner positive ratings for the most part, democracies are like that, as does NATO.

I would have thought Pakistan would receive better ratings, although I suspect the border clash with India had something to do with it--although if that were true, you'd think India would have more favorable ratings. Hard to say.

That China suffers is also a bit of a surprise, although playing chicken with surveillance aircraft and holding the crew and plane hostage may have something to do with it.

Russia is getting better play, having made the switch from evil empire to at least partially friendly power.
