MagWeb.com in Min's New Media Report
MagWeb.com was mentioned in a report on subscription-based web sites, noting that our "bundling multiple related titles into a niche-oriented portal" is one answer to draw paying customers. Notes that ad-supported sites are in trouble, and many companies are "pulling more content behind the sub wall." Notes one good practice is "offering a sliver of free content makes users bump against that sub wall at every turn, letting them know what they are missing." (Not my quote, but MagWeb.com has done this from the beginning).
I was quoted: "Russ Lockwood, president, MagWeb reprints 96 military history titles and their archives online. He pays the publishers royalties from the $59.95/yr access fee. For the titles, 'they get a larger marketing awareness, a new revenue stream, and they are putting under- utilized assets back in play,' says Lockwood." (Couldn't have said it better myself--well, I guess I did say so myself (grin)).
Other tips and ideas from other subscription sites are included. It's nice to be mentioned with some of the larger sites like Yahoo, iVillage, Britannica, and others.

Lockwood and MagWeb.com in USA Today Article About War Movies
Yesterday's front page article in USA Today explained the newfound patriotism and the comeback of the war movie as a Hollywood genre. In amongst the quotes from Steven Spielberg, Mel Gibson, and others was a couple paragraphs from Russ Lockwood and MagWeb.com.
Here's the link to the on-line version of the article:
Now, you have to keep reading the article to the end, because that's where my quotes come in--the finishing touch on the article. At least now I have an answer to the burning question (big grin here), "What do Spielberg, Gibson, and Lockwood have in common?"
Seriously, it's nice to be quoted in mainstream media, and thanks to all of you out there who e-mailed your kind comments about the article. --RL

MagWeb.com Profile and a Lockwood Industry Talk
A short profile of MagWeb.com at PrincetonInfo.com
From US 1, a newspaper, comes a short profile on MagWeb.com.
That night, MagWeb.com Russ Lockwood spoke before the Association of Internet Professionals at the Sarnoff Auditorium in Princeton, NJ. The topic was an analysis of running a content site and business using subscription fees instead of traditional banner advertising revenues. With the collapse of advertising revenues, the closure of several ad-supported content sites, and new fee-supported archive sites from major publishers, Lockwood's lonely 1996 vision is coming closer to reality.
