Orlando Sentinel Reviews MagWeb.com
My PR firm just passed along an article written by Chris Cobbs for the Cyberscene column in the Sunday July 22 issue of the Orlando Sentinel. It's a favorable review of MagWeb.com!
I went looking to see if it was on-line, but only the abstract was available, but you could buy the article direct. So I figured, how much could that be? Since I had been an editorial director for AT&T's on-line division, I know what was charged ($2-$3 per article) back in 1995-6. I figured it would probably less expensive by now. Here's the answer:
Description | Price |
Orlando Sentinel Power User Annual Pass (1200 articles per year)
| $299.95 |
Orlando Sentinel Annual Pass (360 articles per year)
| $149.95 |
Orlando Sentinel Power User Month Pass (100 articles) | $39.95 |
Orlando Sentinel Monthly Subscription (30 articles) | $14.95 |
Orlando Sentinel Week Pass (15 articles) | $9.95 |
Orlando Sentinel 24-Hour Pass (5 articles) | $5.95 |
Orlando Sentinel Single Article | $2.25 |
|
They're asking $2.25 for an individual article--403 words by the way and it certainly captured the essence of MagWeb.com. It's a good article (I liked the fact that he noted some features not normally pointed out by other reviewers), and it was syndicated by Knight-Ridder, so you may have seen it in your local paper.
The pricing surprised me, and yet, also pleased me. MagWeb.com charges $60 for a year (about 6,000 posted articles [1 cent each], plus the existing 22,000-article archive). The OS charges $300 for 1200 articles [25 cents each, no archive]. It means we are by far the best value on the web as a military history article archive. And what a gap!
And it's food for thought, too. Not that we're going to be charging $2.25 an article or 25 cents an article, but some of the new technology we're refining will start to go into effect by the end of the year. I've always meant MagWeb.com to pull in lots of people at low cost ($5 month) rather than few people at high cost (sorry, $2.25 is too high a cost, but when it takes $1.50-$2 to process a credit card...).
I think a lot about business models and pricing now that we've reached 5 years old. I've eschewed the flash in favor of substance--which is why this dot com is still around. As we reach 100 magazines/publications, we'll continue to deliver value. It's apparent advertising as the sole income for a full-time content site has pretty much failed. And I refuse to sell any customer info (we've been approached a couple of times--heck, we don't even use cookies because I find that a violation of privacy). Finding that mix between low enough to provide value and high enough to sustain business is always tricky. Rest assured MagWeb.com will chart the course as best we can.

Happy 5th Birthday, MagWeb.com!
MagWeb.com completed its fifth year in operation! Technically, we incorporated on May 1, 1996, so we're really 5 years and 2 months old (and our first web page--the generic Netscape "Home Page"--was up May 24), but we first posted the fledgling 8-magazine beginnings of MagWeb.com on July 1.
We would like to say a huge "Thank You!" to the publishers, members, and others who have contributed to MagWeb.com's existence and growth. Starting and running a business is never easy, and we've put in long hours and significant investments into making our site a reality, and then improving it as we went along. With 22,000+ articles, 17,000+ images, and somewhere around 1/3 of a million hyperlinks criss-crossing through the archive, your ability to click on a link and retrieve an article represents a heckuva lot of behind-the-scenes effort.
Along the way, we've picked up our share of awards and accolades, met a wonderful group of people from around the world, taken a couple technological tumbles, and kept standing while other dot.coms blew mega-millions and imploded. We look forward to continued support and growth, while bringing more features on-line. As much as the last five years have been rewarding, I'm really looking forward to the next exciting five years.
