We received the following--RL. Not to shock you but I was there at the WTC doing work for the Port Authority. My survey team was in the PATH station when the first plane hit. We thought we smelled a track fire and evacuated the station. When we got to the mezzanine, we were being yelled at by people with bullhorns to flee. We got to the plaza level, and could see debris raining down. It didn't sink in what was happening. I turn to look at tower 1, to see the plane colliding with tower 2. My body took over and I ran. I ran all the way to city hall. I did not see the towers go down. I went straight to my office which I found was sealed shut. I forced my way in and got a call out to my wife. She has handled this all very well and has been my rock of support. I fled the city by ferry, then by train to get home. I got word the next day that the rest of my team (and all PB employees for that matter) made it safely out of the building. For those of you reading this I was writing this email on Thursday, the first day I went back to work, but suspended writing it due to multiple bomb threats to my office. I am going to finish it this morning, Monday the 17th. Images keep coming to my mind, in fits. There are some that I will never get rid of: the half burnt manila folder falling in front of me, the plane impacting the tower, and the people jumping. I experienced true terror that day...and it will be forever in my mind. Now before anyone gets the idea that I can't handle it, I will say that with all of you: my support network, I find myself back in the office, and doing what I have to do. I want to say thank you, to all of you, for thinking of me, and reaching out to me.
