Battleline

Ancients Card Game

Review by Russ Lockwood

This is a rather quick two-player card game from GMT, ostensibly about ancients, but in reality it can be about spaceships, War of the Roses, or any other period. About the only thing that ties it to ancients is the computer artwork.

Battleline contains a deck of cards divided into six colors, further divided into values 1 to 10. Your "battleline" consists of nine spaces, each of which can hold three cards. There are also a few special cards that do things such as switch cards, throw away cards, etc. You alternately pick and place cards in the spaces until one player captures either five of nine spaces, or captures three spaces in a row.

In essense, it's poker. Straight flushes beat 3 of a kind, which beats straights, etc.

And that's about it. It's a "cute" game if you don't mind the term, and certainly quick to learn and quicker to play. This will appeal more to kids than to adults. It just didn't have that replay value beyond the first couple of times. Ivanhoe is a better card game.
