Oscar Sierra!

MagWeb.com CEO Russ Lockwood suffered a traumatic event upon return from Borodino 2002 and a crawl of various battlefields and historical sites in Virginia: the main production PC for MagWeb.com suffered a hard drive failure. With the sickening sound of a drive hung in grinding limbo, the euphoria and peacefullness of the past two weeks morphed into disbelief and rage. The damn machine's shot to Dell. Great way to start a week. Warranty expired, too.

However, a new Dell PC was standing by, delivered just before Labor Day, and sitting in its box, in anticipation of a leisurely transfer over the next month. So much for leisure. It's not so much setting the system up, but reloading all the software. Worse, this new machine contained Windows XP, which seems to stand for "eXtra craP" -- because every default is turned on and excess software is loaded due to marketing deals and the interface is completely different, and the new Service Pack 1 just came out and...

You get the idea. A week has gone by and the new production PC is more or less running as before. Quite frankly, it's taken me more time to fathom the XP interface and find out where Microsoft programmers hid the one damn box that turns on/off some "feature" than anything else--"fade-in" menu options come to mind. What stupid bastard thought that forcing me to wait while a menu bar slowly faded into view was a bright idea? Software drivers are another problem--still don't have a scanner (Umax had to write a new program, instead of allowing a simple driver download from its web site--$14.95 for the CD, thank you, and mailing time. Gee, thanks!), and the Nikon digital camera errors out before moving the files. I'm still trying to disentangle a number of useless programs (AOL and MSN "craP" comes to mind, as I don't use either) out of the interface and off my hard drive.

Sigh. Upgrading is never easy, but it's worse when you have to do it immediately. Had the hard drive lasted but a month more, this trauma would not have happened. That's the way it goes.

So, I apologize for interrupting our postings while I sort out the technical problems. MagWeb.com itself was fully operational during the time. All data is intact. All functions running at full speed. But my back-end production PC will get a hard drive transplant, which will also necessitate reloading all the software again. I'll have to decide whether to pay for the upgrade to Windows XP. On the one hand, it is the operating system of choice. On the other, the thought of going back and cleaning up the craP, downloading the service pack, and retooling gives me pause.

      --Russ Lockwood, CEO

Why We Must Fight

We are not simply battling forces of evil, but forces of misanthropy, in whose thoughts and deeds focus not just upon the death of our corporeal body, but of the creativity, optimism, and passion that marks the progress of the human race. It's more than a fight for whatever we do on a day-to-day basis. It's a war about options. It's a war about allowing sentient beings to reach their potential. It's a war for that magnificent spark of achievement we call the future.

That's why we not only should fight, but why we must fight.

MagWeb.com Membership Poll: Online

MagWeb.com hasn't polled the membership with questions serious and fun in a couple years. It's time to do it again. Last time, it was via e-mail. This time, thanks to VP Bill Abernathy, it's all on-line!

Your answers are strictly confidential, as always we do NOT sell, lend, trade, rent, or otherwise give out member info! This poll helps us understand the needs and wants of our members (that's you!), and we'll figure out a nifty prize for a lucky, randomly drawn member or two.

Thank you! We'll release the aggregated results in September. --RL.

Upgraded Search Engine!

You may have noticed a slight hiccup of late concerning our search engine. Quite literally, we overran it--exceeded the operating parameters with more articles (.htm files) than it could handle. In technical terms (Russ' technical terms, anyway), it got "flaky." So, thanks to VP Tibor Vari, we upgraded to the new version, which created its own set of new problems, including rebuilding the index...that took 21 straight hours by itself.

    Three observations:

    • First, we apologize for any inconvenience. We know how important search engines are in researching a topic.
    • Second, I have to chuckle everytime I see a Star Trek episode when they "reinitialize the warp core," "rerout deflector array tachyon fields," and other techy tech things on the fly. Unless software writers revolutionize themselves, I figure any given five-year mission would end up with the Enterprise hanging dead in space for four of those years. I wonder, after a software patch or upgrade, if the captain queries the computer, would he be greeted with: "Not working"?
    • and Third, thank you for your patience. Like an iceberg, clicking on a link and pulling up an article is only the tip of what goes on. There's a whole lot of work that you'll never see, and when everything runs smoothly, you should never have to see.

Osprey Military Journal

Vol. 4 no. 4 Supplement: Wargaming and Modeling (coming July 2002, $4.95), offers a short review of the MagWeb.com BattleMusic CD: Emperor Triumphant "from MagWeb.com, the popular on-line military history archive." Sorry, I can't go into more detail of this mildly positive CD review--you'll have to read it yourself in a month or so. However, it's also nice to know that the columnist for Osprey considers MagWeb.com "popular" -- a nice pat on the back for our efforts.
