Avon, 1998, $6.50, ISBN 0-380-78828-4, 376 pgs., paperback Book One of the Heritage Trilogy posits a future circa 2039-2040 where the US and Russia become strong allies against the UN, with about a dozen neutral nations watching the coming war. The trigger proves to be a Martian archaeological dig by the US, with UN observers -- including 50 soldiers of the French Foreign Legion. The US responds with 30 Marines. Douglas crafts a well-plotted tale of ingenuity, stealth, and some good old-fashioned butt kicking in an airless environment. He mixes in Mars legends (the face) with psychology (ancient astronaut religions) and a plausible look at near-future combat operations. Along the way, he provides a number of memorable characters. All told, it's an enjoyable ride with the Marines on the Red Planet. Other Books in the Series
