WWII German "Anzio Annie" [Leopold] RR Gun

article and photos by Russ Lockwood

Dedicated by the Anzio Beachhead Veterans of WWII on June 28, 1989, this is the RR gun Leopold, called "Anzio Annie" by US troops. The 280mm K5(E) had a barrel length of 70 feet, a range of up to 38 miles with conventional shells (93.8 miles with the special charges and the rather inaccurate Peenemude Arrow shell), and weighed 215 tons.

Out of 45 RR batteries (of various calibers) formed during the war, only two RR guns survive: the Leopold and another 280mm K5 at Cap Griz Nez, France.
