One of the first post-WWII USSR tanks this redesign of the T-44 (successor to the T-34) started production in 1948. Over 30,000 (including the upgraded version the T-55) were manufactured over 30 years and versions were supplied to over 35 countries. The T-55 came into service in 1958 with a more powerful 100mm gun, bigger engine, and modified turret.
