WWII Japanese Type 97 Tankette Te-Ke

article and photos by Russ Lockwood

Last of the two-man tankettes from Japan. Armed with 37mm gun (and MGs when gun not available). Obsolete when the war began, it served admirably in China where no other armored opposition was around. Produced through the end of the war, in many cases as a troop/cargo carrier with turret removed, after 1943 most wee removed from front line service and placed as dug-in pillboxes across the islands of the Pacific.

Crew of two. 37mm gun, speed 26mph, range 155 miles.
