WWII German PzIII Tank

article and photos by Russ Lockwood

Introduced in 1937, the Pz III models A-D were all withdrawn by 1940, but the E and F models were mass produced. Had a crew of five. Packed a 37mm main gun and two MGs. Speed 25mph, range 100 miles.

The G model upgunned to 50mm and added armor, and the J used a longer, more powerful 50mm gun. The L model added more armor, while the N used a short 75mm gun.

The chassis served for additional models, such as flamethrowers, amphibious tanks, recovery vehicles, cargo carriers, and even a model to run on rails for RR patrols. The chassis also served as the basis for the Stug III.
