WWII German Hetzer Tank Destroyer

article and photos by Russ Lockwood

Guderian called for a light tank destroyer with overhead protection in March 1943. A prototype using the Czech Pz38 (t) chassis rolled through tests in 1943, and 2,584 were produced from April 1944 to May 1945. Although cramped for its crew, the low silouette, good mobility, and angled armor provided excellent service. Hetzers served after the war with Czech and Swiss armies.

Crew 4, 75mm gun, 1 MG, Speed 26mph, Range: 110 miles
