A version to replace the STuGIII was shown as a model in October 1943 and final prototype in December 1943. 769 were produced from January to November 1944.
An improved version JgPzIV/70 mounted a longer and better gun, although it became nose heavy and forced a production change to make the front two road wheels out of solid steel instead of the usual rubber rimmed examples to reduce wear. 930 of these were produced from August 1944 to March 1945.
