WWII German PzIV Tank

article and photos by Russ Lockwood

The mainstay of the German armored forces rolled out as a prototype in 1937. The Models A-E were armed with short 75mm gun. The F1 used the same short 75mm, but the F2 incorporated the long 75mm. The G Model increased armor protection and the later G versions sported an even longer 75mm gun. The H model used a new transmission and the J Model went to manually operated turret traverse and had several shortcuts for production. The tank went to German allies as well and served throughout the war--and into the 1950s and 60s in the Middle East.

Variations included ammo carrier, bridgelayers, artillery, Jagdpanzer IV, infantry support, and more.

Crew: 5, 75mm gun, 2MGs, Speed: 25mph, Range: 130 miles.
