WWII German JagdPz VI Jagdtiger Tank Destroyer

article and photos by Russ Lockwood

Early 1943 plans called for a self-propelled AT with 128mm gun. A wooden model was completed Oct 20, 1943 and a finished prototype in April 1944. The suspension had to be redesigned, which pushed production back to July. 150 were ordered, although with the note in Oct 1944 that when production finnished, the assembly line would be retooled for PzV Panthers. This was rescinded in January 1945.

Damage from combat, or damage from testing?

A total of 77 were produced from July 1944 to March 1945. Only two units received the tanks: Panzerjagerabteilung 653 saw action in the Ardennes and Panzerjagerabteilung 512 which saw action defending Germany proper (including the Ramagen Bridgehead operation).

If MagWeb.com's Russ Lockwood lets go, the whole tank might fall over. Listed height is 9 feet 8.1 inches (plus a couple inches of concrete pad)--still makes Russ feel small at only 6 feet tall.
