STuGIIIA prototypes produced in 1937, with first 30 produced Jan-May 1940 to use used in France. Drive train and ignition improvements marked the Model B: 320 produced June 1940-May 1941, some used in Balkans operations. Model C and D (50 Cs and 150 Ds produced May-Sep 1941) with superstructure modifications. Three D models were in North Africa in the attacks on Gazala and Tobruk.

The E Model (272 produced Sep 1941-May 1942) added armor and a MG. F Model (359 produced Mar-Sep 1942) used a longer 75mm gun and added an exhaust fan to expel gun fumes.

The F8 model (334 produced Sep-Dec 1942) improved the chassis design, added armor, added a second MG, and upgraded engine ventilation. The G model (7,720 produced Dec 1942-March 1945) added a commander's cupola and armor changes. It served through the end of the war. Also, 173 PzIIIs were sent back to the factory in 1944 to be refitted as STuG IIIs.
