WWII German JagdPz V Jagdpanther Tank Destroyer

article and photos by Russ Lockwood

In October 2 1942, the Army requested an 88mm gun variant of the new Panther tank (mounting a 75mm), and a prototype was delivered on December 16 1943. Production commenced in January 1944. Difficult to destroy due to thick and effectively sloped armor, it also mounted a fragmentation grenade anti-personnel system on the roof. Only 392 were produced due to material shortages and transportation disruptions.

Delivered to Panzerjagerabteilung 654 and 559 in June 1944. The first was brought up to full complement (42), but the latter never received more than a company's worth (10-14 vehicles). Others were issued to seven different Panzer Divisions, a Panzer Brigade, and the Fuhrer Grenadier Division.

Crew 5, Speed 28mph, Range: 100 miles
