Successor to the KV series of heavy tanks, the IS-1 (a few produced in 1943) had an 85mm gun, and the IS-2 with a 122mm gun to defeat the German Panthers and Tigers was put into production in January 1944. By late 1944, the tank was in redesign with remodelled hull and improved suspension. It arrived in January 1945, but appeared only in small numbers--though it served in the post-war period.
