WWII German Nashorn Tank Destroyer

article and photos by Russ Lockwood

The Nashorn (Rhinocerous) was later known as the Hornisse (Hornet). Designed in 1942 as an 88mm tank destroyer. 100 were supposed to be built in time for Kursk. 500 in all were ordered, with 494 completed to serve in the USSR, Italy, and France. High silouette and open top was a detraction, but it could defeat virtually any Allied tank at long ranges.

Crew 4, 88mm gun, 1 MG, Speed 26mph, Range: 133 miles

From combat or weapons tests?

Rust on the underside, just above the tracks.
