The PT-76 appeared as a prototype in 1952 as a recon vehicle with amphibious capability. Thin armor protection is sufficient against small arms fire, and the 76.2mm gun is satisfactory against lighter vehicles and armored cars. It entered service in 1955 in the USSR and Warsaw Pact, and a Chinese license saw it in combat in the Indo-Pakistan Wars and in Vietnam. About 7000 were built by the time production ended in 1967.
