War with Iraq
About 2 hours after the end of a US-issued deadline for Saddam Hussein to abdicate, US air forces struck "targets of opportunity" in Iraq to start Gulf War II. Whether the aerial strike, which paired 40 cruise missiles with a quartet of F-117 Stealth Fighters dropping 2,000-pound bombs, was successful or not against the "Iraqi leadership" target is uncertain in the immediate aftermath, but US-led conventional forces pressed closer to the Iraqi border as dawn broke over Kuwait.
The US has not been particularly successful in picking or backing dictators over the years--the Shah of Iran, Panama's Noreiga, and Iraq's Hussein come to mind--but it has a better track record planting democracies in countries we fought and conquered--Japan, Germany, and Italy after WWII come to mind, as well as supplementing democracies--Grenada, Haiti, Panama, and Kosovo come to mind. After Gulf War I, we forgot our role and let Hussein remain.
Perhaps this quip from Stanley Rudin in 1963 may shed some mirth in a mirthless situation:
Frustrate a Frenchman, he will drink himself to death;
Frustrate an Irishman, he will die of angry hypertension;
Frustrate a Dane, he will shoot himself;
Frustrate an American, he will get drunk, shoot you, and then establish a million-dollar program for your relatives. Then he will die of an ulcer.
We just shot back at the dictator. The establishment of democracy where the president doesn't get 100% of the vote will be an expensive program. We may even get an ulcer or two implemeting a plan to provide the Iraqi people with a greater say in their own lives. But we will effect a change to threaten the concept of political tyranny. Why? From Theodore Roosevelt (1902):
From the beginning, our people have markedly combined practical capacity for affairs with power of devotion to an ideal. The lack of either quality would have rendered the other of small value.
Purpose and practice. Some may say interference and arrogance, but it's this fusion of American optimism and confidence that propel us onward despite, or perhaps because of, danger perceived and real.
One thing is for certain. Whether you fly a flag or light a single candle, we all want the war over as quickly as possible and with as few casualties as possible. We need to steel ourselves that there my be more than we expect, or that Operation Iraqi Freedom takes longer than expected, or that we must remain in Iraq to guarantee democracy much the way we remainedin Europe after WWII, but we must also understand that "no option other than victory" sets the right tone.
I wrote the following after September 11, 2001:
We are not simply battling forces of evil, but forces of misanthropy, in whose thoughts and deeds focus not just upon the death of our corporeal body, but of the creativity, optimism, and passion that marks the progress of the human race. It's more than a fight for whatever we do on a day-to-day basis. It's a war about options. It's a war about allowing sentient beings to reach their potential. It's a war for that magnificent spark of achievement we call the future.
That's why we not only should fight, but why we must fight.
We may not have launched Gulf War II with the elegance or eloquence of Gulf War I. But just as World War II finality followed World War I amistice, so we hope Gulf War II will conclude Gulf War I.

Space Shuttle Lost: NASA lost Columbia today as it plunged through the atmosphere enroute to landing. Sadness prevails upon such a catastrophe, highlighting the ultimate human cost of exploration. According to the news, the shuttle was traveling approximately 12,500 miles per hour at around 200,000 feet over Texas when the malfunction occurred. We must, of course, examine the circumstances and particulars to learn what happened. The investigation will be, as with lessons drawn from previous disasters, a painful process.
The advance of our knowledge and understanding of the world has never been easy. Hard as we try, we will never be able to make risk 0%. When a disaster occurs, we can only console the families who have lost loved ones, and honor those explorers in our memory and our deeds.

Newsday Reviews MagWeb.com
Newsday, a newspaper based in Long Island, NY printed a Jan. 21 review by Bob Suter regarding MagWeb.com, so here it is:
www.magweb.com: While war - of which there is much talk these days - may not be one of mankind's more commendable enterprises, it, nonetheless, commands considerable attention from scholars, historians and cadres of individuals who are fascinated by what happens when violent conflict erupts between peoples. If you count yourself among them, this is the mother lode. MagWeb.com offers full text and graphics of current and back issues of some 105 military history and related
magazines along with additional material not found in the magazines and "War Lore" articles contributed by the site's growing membership. Plus, there's a bulletin board where members can exchange information and a shopping area, as well. Free sample articles are available while a $5 monthly fee provides access to everything at this pop-up ad-free site.
Well, we liked the "this is the mother lode" comment and this is one of the first reviews that specifically praises the ad-free environment! Evidently, we made quite an impression on the reviewer.
A slight correction: MagWeb.com offers 106 magazines (not 105) and that the membership price for a year is now $75, which is $6.25 a month (renewals are at a 10% discount: $67.50 a year, or $5.60 a month).

MagWeb.com Poll on CBS Marketwatch
MagWeb.com's poll from November was picked up by CBS Marketwatch in the December news section. Sorry for the delay, but we just got a report back...
In addition, MagWeb.com's poll found its way onto Yahoo Business News, Hoovers News, and Northernlight's library, also all in December. That should have increased the number of eyeballs headed our way. Now, if only we could have gotten the TV cameras and radio microphones rolling...
Here are URLs sent us.

Virginia Historic Sites
MagWeb.com's Travel section holds information on sites we thought were interesting enough to visit. And if you do visit them, our write-ups contain information about what to look for and what to avoid. It takes a while to create these, and they are photo-intensive (and thus load slowly), but here are a number of sites we visited in Virginia after our Borodino 2002 Napoleonic Conference: five Historic sites and one battlefield.

Happy New Year!
MagWeb.com wishes you a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year as we look forward to 2003.
MagWeb.com Monthly and Year-End Tally
MagWeb.com ends the month of December with 22 issues or equivalents, 2 book reviews, 8 news items, 1 One-Drous Chapter, and 1 other article.
Year to Date 2002 total: 293 issues, 82 news items, 75 book reviews, 20 parts of WWII Operation Cartwheel, a downloadable MP3 file, 9-part article on Tank Development, 1 WWII Memoir, 21-part results of the MagWeb.com poll, 3 One-Drous book chapters, 21-part Borodino 2002 Conference Report, and 79 other articles.
In case you keep "per month averages", that's 24.4 issues, 6.8 news items, 6.3 book reviews, and a heckuva lot of other articles, conference coverage, and other goodies to keep you up to date on the world of military history. All of this is packed into a 40,000-article archive!
And it's all in electronic format, which means that if you're doing research, you can copy text directly from your browser to your word processor--no retyping or scanning! And, the URL at the top of your browser serves as the reference for your footnotes. It couldn't be easier.
Price Increase and Renewal Discount as of January 1, 2003
After six years of holding the line on pricing while continuously building up the archive, MagWeb.com is raising prices on January 1, 2003 for most membership rates. However, renewals will get an automatic 10% discount as long as you keep your membership current. For example, the $59.95 1-year membership now costs $75. However, current members renewing receive a 10% discount ($7.50), thus the 1-year cost would be $67.50. Considering all we've added since 1996, it is a modest increase.
As promised back in 1996, Charter Members retain their original charter rate as long as they maintain their memberships.
