Greenhill Books are to publish next month the first-ever complete version of Napoleon's famous bulletins in English, under the title IMPERIAL GLORY: THE BULLETINS OF NAPOLEON'S GRAND ARMEE.

This valuable work brings together, for the first time, complete translations of the bulletins of the imperial armies from 1805 to 1814. Edited and translated by reputed American scholar J. David Markham, the work is both an important addition to literature on the Napoleonic Wars and a great insight into the mind of one of the world's best propagandists - Napoleon Bonaparte.

Napoleon's bulletins are of immense historical significance, reporting as they do on all the key battles of the Napoleonic Wars. These significant reports reveal not only a great deal about the Napoleonic period but also how Napoleon, that great master of propaganda, relayed history to his people.

Presented for the first time complete in English, and supported by Markham's historical and biographical notes, the bulletins cover the key period between Austerlitz, in 1805, and Waterloo in 1815. The bulletins describe military operations, pick out distinguished officers and units and present Napoleon's own interpretation of battles lost or won. Indeed, these bulletins offer a brilliant insight into an early form of propaganda and highlight the way in which even defeats could be made to sound victorious.

IMPERIAL GLORY is a fascinating book for any student of the wars or of Napoleon's influence in every aspect of empire-building.

J. David Markham is Executive Vice-President and Editor-in-Chief of the International Napoleonic Society, as well as Executive Vice- President of the Napoleonic Alliance. He has organized INS International Napoleonic Congresses in Italy, Israel and Georgia. A lifelong Napoleonic scholar, Markham is published in over twenty-five periodicals and websites, including the Consortium on Revolutionary Europe, The Royal United Services Institute Journal, and Napoleonic Scholarship: The Journal of the International Napoleonic Society. His work has been translated into and published in four languages (French, Georgian, Italian and Russian). In 1999, he was the first American scholar to deliver a paper, published in Russian, to the All-Russian conference on Borodino. Last September he was present at a major conference on Borodino, visiting Moscow and witnessing a major re-enactment on the battlefield itself.

IMPERIAL GLORY: THE BULLETINS OF NAPOLEON'S GRAND ARMEE will be ready next month and first copies will be available at the International Napoleonic Fair on Sunday, 16th February. David Markham will be presenting a talk at the Fair.

The book is 240 x 159mm, has 456 pages and is £18.95.
