The French Tanks
(Compton, Rimailho, Boullaire)

This is a useful trio of articles on the French tank effort in the Great War. Members of the development team (and a British observer) give details of the vehicles and of their battles.

The Russian Army in the World War
(Nicholas Golovine)

Published in 1931 by a serving officer this is a most useful survey of what was right and what was wrong about the Tsarist war effort. Six volumes cover not only the campaigns but issues like desertion, the conscription burden and equipping the army. I am sure Lt General Golovine has axes to grind but I found the counter-arguments very interesting.

Lives of the Warriors Who have Commanded Fleets and Armies
Sir Edward Cust

I have read the three volumes on Von Schomberg, the Duc de Luxembourg and Field Marshal Traun. All are very useful succinct summaries of their military lives. Schomberg (a Huguenot) served a number of masters, Luxembourg was the last of the initial surfeit great generals of Louis XIV and Traun a master of irregular warfare. The series (with 19 volumes) is well worth acquiring in whole or part.
