Malcolm Brown for Tempus
Malcolm Brown is the author of the "Imperial War Museum Book of…" series, and this is similar in style. Once again the use of personal memoirs is a major part of the book and these are very useful, particularly (if I may mention one) the account of the feeling amongst the French infantry when they retook Fort Douaumont. Brown comments that today we might find it hard to understand the mindset, so instead of dismissing it, he quotes it (and from a real participant, not a purveyor of chauvinistic propaganda). The book is one level in detail above Alistair Horne, and uses Horne unashamedly to permit a more summary approach. My only criticism would be the lack of sensible maps of the various stages of the battle.
