Jean Meyer for Economica
This is in French and not particularly easy French either. However, the topic is worth the effort the effort as it covers that rare event (after Cromwell), enemy control of the Channel. Tourville’s great victory over the Royal Navy is placed in the context of Louis’ political and diplomatic plans. The battle itself occupies but a small part of the story. One is left with the feeling that no-one at Versailles expected this to happen and had no contingency plans for it when it did happen.
