John Barratt for Sutton

Barratt is one of those amateur historians who seem to be proliferating, they have avoided the groves of academe, but "write extensively". It is difficult to judge the quality of analysis of these autodidacts, but I usually find their collection of facts fearsome. In this case the subject is the Royalist Army (in the best Ronseal fashion). The first section of the book views the army thematically (officers, cavalry) and the second part examines its activities in each theatre of the war. Both are well written, though I enjoyed the latter section more. You will find much of interest here though sometimes the rigour is missing. The section on the Welsh infantry seemed to duck and dive as to numbers and importance - some rather clearer conclusions might have helped.
