Geoffrey Swain for Tempus
Swain's thesis seems to be that there were three forces at play in Civil War Russia. The Bolsheviks (urban worker based), the SRs (peasant based) plus sundry Nationalists and Cossacks, and the Whites. He believes victory went to the Reds because they ultimately adapted their policies to earn the support of the Greens, whereas the Whites bereft of policies and much sense failed to do so. The much heavier political slant makes it an interesting comparison with Mawdsley.
