Anthony Clayton for Cassell

Critics of Great War history note how few books there are in English on the French and Russian Armies and how many on individual British units. Of course this is mostly a complaint about not being multi-lingual but the silence can be oppressive. Clayton who wrote the excellent books on African frontiers wars and French decolonisation is a very good start. The book is a summary, it does not cover individual operations in depth (though at least we know about them), but it does cover the trends in tactics, morale and organisational matters throughout the period. Also very usefully it chronicles what the French thought of their allies over the period. If history is to be more than a mere recitation of “facts” then its strength must lie in its analysis, and here Clayton is as good as ever.
