All The Kaiser’s Men

Ian Passingham for Sutton

This is in many ways similar to Anthony Clayton’s Paths Of Glory which covers the French army in World War One. Passingham instead deals with the Germans. The themes are therefore much different from our usual World War One book. Here the villains are Falkenhayn (to a degree) and Ludendorf. The more I read of Erich the more he sounds like a wargamer – no idea what to do so let’s launch an attack. The background is not the need to learn (as it was for the Allies) but the grinding effect of the Blockade. The undoubted horrors of the Somme and Third Ypres sound differently where it is not the repeated attacks that are criticised, but the repeated counter-attacks and the milling effect of these long Allied combats. If the Germans had a good time in 1914 and 1915 even “victories” were disastrous in later years. Passingham is not an academic. This is a big print and lots of picture book, but it is also rather interesting in looking at our much beloved sights from another direction.
