Richard Doherty for Spellmount
This is a history of the Eighth Army from 1941-45. As such it is a celebration of the men who fought in that formation rather than a revisionist history. If you have read Patrick Delaforce’s books you will know what to expect. I found the coverage excellent, especially of the many VCs won by 8th Army soldiers. Although the maps were a little weak it was still possible to follow the actions. Doherty has set the usual reporting level as about division level (though we often descend to lower levels to feature particular combats). I found this vital in keeping in mind what was going on in the Bigger Picture. Given its avoidance of too much criticism the section on having to hand over Croat and Cossack prisoners is all the stronger.
