The First Armies

Doyne Dawson for Cassell

The Cassell series on warfare is a hard one to evaluate, some volumes are just summaries boiled down over too hot a stove. Others are very good in their own right. This one is in the latter category. It discusses not only how ancient armies fought, but when humans first starting fighting and why. The book has excellent illustrations and a clear explanation of a topic that had eluded my attention to date. The explanation of how chariot warfare was prosecuted is particularly interesting.
