Adrian Goldsworthy for Cassell
A book in the Cassell Fields of Battle series this is an excellent example of how to write a Goldilocks book (not too big, not too small, and just right). The book covers the movements up to the battle and those after. There is a review of the two armies and a long summary of the rationale for the two sides' formations. The description of the battle that follows is based on what sources we have and other comparable combats. The treatment is scholarly but not dry, while avoiding the over-excitability of Victor Davis Hanson.
