Ardennes 1944

Booklet

by Bill Rutherford

Written by James Arnold, often a contributor to these pages and long- time Napoleonics editor, this booklet is published by Osprey Publishers, Ltc., London, UK 1990. Containing 96 pages, b&w photos and color drawings, it is available in paperback for $14.95.

Another winner from Osprey! Ardennes 1944, fifth in Osprey's campaign series, packs in an amazing amount of information about the Battle of the Bulge. Arnold follows the successful campaign series formula. He writes clearly and concisely, describing the course of events of the campaign, the reasons for the events, and the forces involved. Loads of photographs (some still a bit large for my taste), all informative, and evocative of the mood ofthe campaign, are included. Numerous color drawings of equipment and troops well serve the miniaturist. Several organizational tables and maps, both black and white and in color, further clarify the course of events. I like the three dimensional battlefield maps - they illustrate particularly well how and why the various engagments took place. A chronology of events and a well done guide to further reading complete the book. Oh - four pages of wargaming notes are also squeezed in - Arnold has a number of good ideas about gaming this campaign, both from the strategic/operational level, and the tactical level. If you're interested in WWII, get this book!
