Rules for Ancient Miniatures

Rules

by John Boehm

TACTICAL WARGAMING FOR ARMIES UP TO 1200 A.D.

These are a homegrown set of ancient rules that have gone commercial. They are produced by Roger C. Campbell, 2834 Calumet Circle, Jackson ville, FL 32250. The price is $6.00. The rules consist of 12 typed pages, an illustrated cover and a one-sided play sheet, all in a clear plastic binder.

The rules appearto be derived in part from earlier editions of WRG rules. The scale is 20:1. The troop base sizes are for 1 5mm troops but can be adapted for 25 or 5mm. Base sizes seem fairly standard. Troops are classified in 4 classes for morale (A-D), as regular or irregular, and as light, heavy or heavyarmored. Basing options foropen, loose or close orderare provided. Formations appear similar to WRG. A point system is also provided.

The author contemplates equal points battles although provides for offensive meeting engagements and offensive-defensive scenarios. The orders provision provides for specific types of action and movements and seem fairly standard.

Movement, shooting and melee also appear fairly straight forward and apply familiar mechanics. Morale is much simpler than many rules. Only six sided dice are used for all calculations and various factors apply to different types of combat. The rules appear to be an attempt to provide a simple and straightforward game using many familiar conventions. I must acknowledge some lack of clarity, however, or at least understanding on my part, as to some of the morale and combat calculations. The rules would seem to be intended to appeal to those looking for something simpler in ancient wargames, but may require some clarifications from the author. Unfortunately brefity doesn't always insure complete understanding on everyone's part, as what may seem obvious to the author is not necessarily clear to the reader.
