Ancient and Renaissance Campaign Rules

by John Boehm

This is a 29 page soft cover booklet of campaign rules for ancient and renaissance wargames written by the prolific Rudy Scott Nelson. I've made no secret in the past that I consider wargames played in the context of a campaign to be among the most enjoyable. These rules provide the framework for that campaign. The system does not require a non-playing umpire, unlike many English campaign systems, and allows all to participate. This in my opinion is preferable.

It is designed to be played on a hex map and describes how to set up a tactical tabletop based on encounters within a hex. The sequence of play includes a yearly and monthly production cycle, a diplomacy phase, monthly turns, naval phases, and land activity phases. Mercenary, native and allied forces are provided for. An economic system is essential to any campaign and this provides a simple and straightforward system based on resource capacity per hex and necessary expenditures for maintenance and upkeep.

Strategic movement, commanders and alternative siege mechanisms are included. Also provided are simple naval rules, neutral countries, outposts, scouting, promotions, weather, and treaties. A five page supplement also includes fantasy adaptations.

In summation the rules appear to provide an adequate and workable basis for ancient/renaissance campaigns. They cost $6.00 and are available from Rudy S. Nelson, Ashland, AL.
