Mitrailleuses and Machine Guns

Book

by Pat Condray

The author, Captain J.F. Owen, R.A., was a professional officer in Queen Victoria's Army, and this is his report on the barbaric devices coming into use in the latter half of the 19th Century. It includes fascinating reports by English and other officers who served in either the French or Prussian Armies for educational purposes and witnessed the new weapons. Owens also reviewed accounts of such eccentricities as the Requa Billinghurst Volley Gun of ACW fame.

I was prepared to dismiss his interesting but necessarily subjective anecdotal treatment as trivial until I discovered just what I was looking for! Results of firing trials between contemporary machine-guns and other ordnance! What would do the most damage in two minutes to a target of 90 horse or 100 foot from 400, 600, 800, or 1,000 yards - a small Gatling, a 12 pdr breechloader, 9 pdr muzzle loader, or Mitrailleuse? How many guns in a French, Bavarian, Norwegian, or Spanish machinegun battery? At 400 yards the Gatlingwas superior, followed by the muzzle loader, mitrailleur, breech loader, Snider and Martini-Henry rifles in that order. For the other results, you can't go wrong buying the book for $8. Partizan Press.
