The Red Army of the
Great Patriotic War 1941-1945

Booklet

by Bill Rutherford

Text by Steven Zaloga, illustrations by Ron Volstad, Osprey Pub. Ltd., London, UK, 1989, 48 pgs, b&w photos and color plates, pb, $9.95.

Red Army starts out with a five page summary of World War II on the Eastern Front to set the tone of what follows. Zaloga then provides a broad overview of the organization of the Soviet Army of WWII. More importantly, using 33 previously unpublished (in the West) photos and eight pages of color plates, he examines, in considerable detail, the wide variety of Soviet uniforms and personal equipment used during the war. The well annotated photos were all selected to this end - there's no filler. Two and a half pages of rank and arm ofservice colornotes complement the uniform descriptions. The color plates were very good, detailing 24 troop types, ranging from NKVD to Cossack. This book is an example of what can be accomplished within the Men-at-Arms format. I strongly recommend it to students and uniform buffs of the Soviet forces, as well as modelers and gamers of that army.
