Introduction
by James Gaite, UK
The final area of dispute between
the rationales of the Traditionalists and Revisionists deals with the deployment and execution of
Prussian tactical doctrine. The Traditionalists adhere to the belief that,
above all else, it was in the area of tactics that the answer to Prussia’s
humiliating defeat lies; the Revisionists disagree. This fourth installment
will attempt to outline the main arguments proffered by both sides;
however, due to the overabundance of works available to the author and the
limits on time and space, some areas of this discussion will be curtailed
although every effort has been made to lessen the effects of this curtailment on
the readers understanding of the reasoning behind each historical argument.
The analysis is split into two main arenas - unit type and the battles.
With excellent articles on both these subjects in previous editions of First
Empire, the wish of the author is not to regurgitate these works but to
extract the pertinent points and compare them with other historians’ viewpoints and ideas.
