Written by Nick Sekunda and published by Osprey Publishing, this is the seventh volume in Osprey's Elite Series and their second effort using this expanded format to explore the customers, tactics and dress of ancient armies. If you are interested in Greek warfare in the Classic period, covering the 4th and 5th centuries B.C., you should purchase this book. The plates, by noted artist Angus McBride, are alone worth the cost of the volume. it is also a fine supplement to Osprey's earlier book The Greek and Persian Wars. The information found in this book is excellent - especially the description of the various city-states, their manner of dress and the excellent supporting color plates used to drive the point home. As a painter who enjoys a great deal of variety in his armies I only wish more space was devoted to line drawings of various Greek shield designs. There are some excellent examples of shield designs in the book. I only wish there had been more. My only serious concern about The Ancient Greeks is its format. Unlike the standard Osprey text which offers a significant amount of information about the period followed by a brief explanation of the plates, The Ancient Greeks has a majority of its text devoted to explaining the plates. A rather annoying situation since the reader has to constantly flip between the text and the plates breaking up the flow of the book. Aside from the format problem The Ancient Greeks is a valuable book to add to your collection. More Reviews
