Falcon Miniatures

15mm 1870 Series

by Pat Condray

Falcon Miniatures 15mm 1870 Series: These figures, which cover most of the important types for the war, are cleanly cast, correctly equipped with respect to the soldiers, and fairly well with respect to the horse. The positions are well suited for wargames, with most of the infantry in advancing or on guard positions. Anatomy is fair to very good. The smooth crisp lines of most of the designs fairly invite the paintbrush. No artillery, unfortunately, were provided, so I don't know if this manufacturer has ended the 15mm Franco-Prussian artillery blight. The prices, at 20 foot figures or 8 mounted for $4.00, 4 guns for $4.00, is a bargain. They are available directly from Falcon, Suite 102, 1 High Street, Medford, Massachusetts 02155.

Having said all that, I should mention that these 15mm figures from base to top of kepi are 20mm in height. Thus they are about on a par with Pioneer, and obviously larger than Freikorps or the Snuggles and Bear foot figures, although the Snuggles and Bear horses, being originally designed for 20mm, make the riders roughly compatible in scale. I could quibble that the Spahi carries his saber on his person instead of under the saddle on the near side, but that subtlety has eluded all 15mm manufacturers so far.
