A Year at War 1809

Five-Volume Set

by Jim Arnold

My period of most intense historical interest is the Austrian Campaign of 1809 (stay patient dear readers, it finally looks like someone may publish my account of the campaign!). Thus it is of some personal interest that C.A. Sapherson of Raider Games has published "A Year at War... 1809". This five-volume set is soft covered, staple bound, and sells for between $15 and $18 (they were a little vague on this, write them: Raider Games, 119 Elmete Way, Leeds, LS8 2ND, UK). Volume I contains an overview and chronology, some useful information on the "Mechanics of War" with data on road space taken up by different sized units, speed of movement, etc.

The heart of the series is the next four volumes that provide historical army lists for all the major and most of the minor powers as well as historical orders of battle. These lists are quite comprehensive and include unit names, strengths, and additional detail on what corps they belonged to and in the case of the British and French, where they were assigned (e.g. Portuguese Legion artillery in France; Legion du Midi infantry and artillery in Spain). The historical OBs range from well-known actions such as Talvera, to the obscure Battle of Wasterbotten between the Russians and Swedes (even Mr. Sapherson has his limits here; he provides data on the Russians and notes that nothing is known of the composition of the Swedes). Overall, the wealth of detail is quite staggering. I cannot say if everything is completely accurate. However, casual inspection indicates it is fairly reliable. For people wanting extensive Napoleonic army lists and dispositions for the year 1809, here it is.
