In 1967 Brigadier Peter Young and Lt. Col. J.P. Lawford published their wargame classic - Charge! or How to Play War Games. This book inspired both me and my regular opponent, Bill Protz, to begin our Seven Years War collections. Now, twenty years later, Terry Wise has done the hobby a great service by reprinting Charge! in large paperback. Due to Terry's persistence the facsimile contains all of the original text and photos lacking only the color of the original dust jacket photo. The book contains a complete set of rules for the Eighteenth Century. It is the wonderful narrative, rather than the rules, that make this book a classic. Each rule is explained as to its historical basis and illustrated in the context of a wargame. Can anyone forget the stand by Kornberg's rear guard at the Battle of Sittangbad? No matter in which historical period one is interested, this book, along with H.G. Wells' Little Wars is required reading. It is for those who wonder why this great hobby got started in the first place, and for those who've played one simulation too many and have forgotten what a wargame is supposed to be. Charge! is available from The Courier for $20 (postpaid) from Athena Books, 34 Imperial Crescent, Town Moor, Doncaster DN2 5BU,S. Yorks., England. More Reviews
