Red Cloud' War:

Wagon Box Fight

review by Tom Desmond

This is the Fourth Edition of this short but very informative volume by Jerry Keenan that chronicles a small but very important action during Red Cloud's War. The new edition has been released primarily because of new information uncovered during an archaeological study of the battlefield. Like the studies done on Little Big Horn, the final conclusion has not changed but more information about the locations of the combatants, their activities and movement have been discovered.

The book covers some historical background that leads up to the war, the fight itself and the controversy that surrounded the actual location of the battle. Several appendices cover recollections of the actual participants, the official reports and a nice summary of the archaeological fieldwork that helped solve some of the mystery surrounding the actual location of the fight. There are a number of photographs and maps of the battlefield as well as an extensive bibliography. If you are interested in this period or are fascinated by the effect that battlefield archaeology is having on the conceptions or misconceptions of the battles we recreate, I recommend this book. Available for $14.95 from Combined Publishing, Whitehurst and Clark, 476 West Elm Street, P.O. Box 307, Conshohocken, PA 19428.
