Review:

Swedish Colors and Standards
of the Great Northern War
1700-21

Rules

by Ken Bunger

Authored by Daniel A. Schor and Lars-Eric Heglund. This 2nd revised edition is published in 1994 by Acedia Press, Box 5269, S-650 05 Karlstad, Sweden for $12.50 ppd by IPO or cash.

This fifty-two page booklet is as definitive work on the subject in english as will likely be in print. Of course I also said something similar about the first edition in 1987. There are about 220 black and white drawings of colors and standards with a description of the coloring of both the obverse and reverse sides. An index and excellent bibliography are provided.

There is also a fairly extensive description of the staffs, finials, cloth material and method of construction. The authors provide a useful discussion of the Swedish military organization and recruitment. This booklet is a model of what a refernce work should be, in contrast to the glut of semi-researched "uniform or flag guides" that have permeated the hobby in the past few years. The authors have consulted contemporary sources as well as viewing surviving examples of the colors and standards. Where the evidence is not certain on a particular subject, the authors let the reader know that they are making an educated assumption.

If you have the first edition, throw it away. To the authors' credit they have used much new research to expand and correct the earlier edition. My only criticism is that space dictated that the bibliography is not annotated. I strongly recommend this booklet to both the wargamer and vexillologist.
